Housing the Homeless
Family Promise offers West Side an opportunity to provide hospitality to our homeless neighbors. West Side’s commitment would be to provide four unused classrooms in the education building for one week at three separate times during the year. Groups from West Side, such as Presbyterian Women or the Adult Bible Class, would each take one evening during the week to serve dinner, provide entertainment, and leave cereal for breakfast. Two adults would arrive at 10 p.m. for overnight supervision. At 7 a.m., the families would leave by van to a nearby daycare center which provides showers. The adults would seek jobs or job training while the children attend school. At 5 p.m., a van would return the families to West Side where the cycle would be repeated. West Side would have the benefit of a support church: Christ Episcopal Church in Ridgewood. An estimated 1,500-1,800 people are homeless in Bergen County, at least 500 of them children. Family Promise offers West Side the opportunity to open its beautiful facility to carefully screened neighbors who are in great need of our help, support, and hospitality.
